Get Rid Of Mold In Your Home With These Tips

Mold is a common problem that every homeowner has to deal with at one point or another.  There are multiple ways to approach the problem, so it is important to first identify the area to be able to understand what is the best method to fix it.

Here are some ways you can get rid of the molds in your home.

Professionals

It is always a good idea to involve experts or professionals if you ever encounter a mold problem.  Even in small situations, they can identify problems and solutions for the future and inspect for larger issues.

But for smaller problems, you can look for a complete guide to understand how to deal with those common moldy areas in your home. Some of the tips you can conveniently find online will help you with mold problems that do not require professionals.

Bleach and Water

Bleach is a common household cleaning product that you can find in many homes.  You can create a cleaning solution for mold buildup by mixing bleach with two parts of water.  Use this solution to scrub clean the affected area and let the bleach sit for a few minutes.

This will kill the mold sitting on the surface and help clean deeper and kill the mold that is further into the walls.  After you’ve let the bleach and water mixture sit for a while, dry the area with a clean cloth. This works best on hard surfaces that do not absorb liquids or let substances seep through them.

Ammonia

Ammonia is another cleaning substance that you can use for mold problems.  Your mixture would be equal amounts of clear ammonia and water. Apply the mixture on surfaces using a spray bottle and then leave the area for a few hours to avoid any chemical inhalation.  After your solution has been applied for a few hours, wipe and rinse the area clean. Ammonia can be toxic, so you need to practice safety with caution when using this substance.

NEVER use ammonia to clean surfaces that have already been cleaned with bleach, and NEVER mix the two substances together.  Doing so will create a dangerous chlorine gas, which can be harmful even in small doses.

Distilled white vinegar

The above cleaning solutions can cause damage to certain materials or items in your home.  In particular, bleach can be detrimental to wood furniture so you need to find alternatives for cleaning these items.  Vinegar is a solid option as it is not corrosive and will do well in removing black mold from the surfaces of your wood pieces.

Sandpaper

If you find that mold has set into surfaces such as wood, you will need methods to provide a deeper cleaning.  Sandpaper is a good tool to use to penetrate into these surfaces and reach the root of the problem.

Use sandpaper to ensure your furniture is free of mold problems, and make sure to sand down all areas, including hard to reach or see, and the bottoms of your furniture where mold can grow.  Once you’ve sanded these areas down, you will likely have to refinish your wood surfaces depending on the size of the initial problem.

Carpet shampoo

For carpeted areas, there are shampoos specifically designed to tackle mold and mildew.  These solutions are made to clean, carpeted surfaces that can house deeper mold problems and are harder to clean.

Baking soda

In cases where mold is not as serious of a problem, you can use a baking soda solution.  Spray the affected area with a mixture of dissolved baking soda and water and leave it for a day to penetrate and work its way into the affected surface or area.  In the morning, you can use a scrub to remove the mold from the surface.

Tree oil

Tree oil is a good option to eliminate mold as well.  Mix the tree oil in a spray bottle with water and apply it to the area.  Let the solution work its way into the mold and after allowing it to sit for some time, you can wipe the mold clean.  This alternative also leaves your home with a natural scent to it as well.

Dehumidifier

Mold can be a problem to have to deal with once it has grown and set into different areas and surfaces.  If possible, it is best to address the situation before a problem even occurs. To prevent mold from building up, have a dehumidifier in your home and in areas that see more moisture buildup.  This will help prevent problems from arising and keep the mold to smaller and easier to handle issues.

These solutions will be able to help you with a variety of smaller problems.  It is important to know how to prevent mold from building up again in the future and always remember to wear the necessary protective gear when dealing with any type of fungal or mold problem.
