How To Stay Happy During The Winter Months

Some people adore the winter months. The colder weather makes them feel cozy and comforted, and the fact that Christmas is nearby, and a new year is on the horizon is certainly pleasing as well.

This isn’t how everyone feels, though, and some find that the winter months make them feel very down indeed. They can’t sleep properly, their fitness levels decline, and they feel depressed. There are scientific reasons for this, most commonly linked to the body’s circadian rhythm, yet despite knowing this, it’s not a pleasant way to live.

If you do feel as though the winter months are the worst time of the year, there are some things you can do to make yourself feel happier – read on to find out what some of them are.

Go Outside More

If the idea of spending more time outside seems counterintuitive because of the inclement weather during the winter months, that’s okay – it will be most people’s first reaction. However, the truth is that one of the reasons people get depressed in the winter is due to the lack of daylight; the days are shorter, and the sun is seen for much less time.

If you can get outside when the sun is shining, you’ll see much more of the winter sun than you would if you stayed indoors. Not only that but breathing in the crisp, cold air and getting some exercise will make you feel happier and healthier. Try to go outside for at least 10 minutes each day, and your mood will start to lift.

Prioritize Self-Care

Winter has many connotations linked to it, and one is that it is a time of giving, thanks to Christmas and other holidays. If you’re feeling the effects of the winter weather, you should make sure you give something to yourself as well as everyone else; you should prioritize your self-care.

Self-care will mean different things to different people. For some, it’s taking the time to see friends and family. For others, it’s doing something they’ve always wanted to do, such as getting a hair transplant at or trying out a new hobby.

Others will want to have a duvet day where they can snuggle up with a good book and a hot drink for hours at a time. Whatever it is that will make you feel good, do it.

Make A Fitness Calendar

It can become all too easy during the winter to let our physical fitness slide. In the summer, with the lighter, brighter, warmer days, coming home from work and then going for a run, or getting up early and heading to the gym is much easier.

In the winter, the idea of going out again once you get home is not a pleasant one. As for getting up early, the cold weather and the darkness make this difficult even if you don’t then have to get to a gym class.

So how can you help to improve your fitness during winter and feel happier about it too? The answer is to create a fitness calendar. This will help you to stay motivated, and if you add specific goals to it, you’ll be more inclined to keep working out. Remember, you can always exercise at home if this is easier for you.
