Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood: A Conservation of Traditional Emirati Architecture

The Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood, also known as Al Bastakiya, is an extraordinary neighborhood that preserves Dubai’s rich heritage and bears witness to its historic past. Situated along Dubai Creek, it offers visitors the opportunity to experience the traditional way of life that was prevalent in Dubai from the mid-19th century to the 1970s. With a rental car, you can explore this historic area.

History

The Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood was established in the 19th century by wealthy merchants from Persia who migrated to Dubai to settle. The area was a hub of commerce and trade with busy souks and markets. It was strategically located on Dubai Creek in dominating Dubai and its business transactions overseas.

The buildings in Al Fahidi are distinctive and reflect the traditional Emirati architecture. Structures featuring tall air towers (Barajeel), built using traditional materials such as stone, gypsum, teak, and palm wood, stand side by side, with alleys and public squares in between. These complex designs were natural air conditioning systems prior to the advent of modern technology. The privacy concern of the community is reflected in the lack of front windows, their narrowness, and elevation.

Despite threats of demolition in the 1970s due to urban development plans, the area was rescued and restored by conservationists from the locality and the government.
